Popeye Doyle and Buddy Russo get wind of a big shipment of heroin and begin a tail of the suspects, and their French Connection, two French nationals who are the european link. As money troubles begin for the hoods they decide to kill Popeye and Buddy to give them enough room to bring in the heroin. A combination of police procedural and action/car chase.
This has got to be one of Gene Hackman&#39;s best known films, got him an Oscar, although his best performance i though came in French Connection 2.<br/><br/>The French Connection has a lot to offer a drama, thriller, drugs, car chase etc. Hackman plays Popeye Doyle a hardy cop, who&#39;s ends up chasing a drugs baron, played by Fernando Ray (Frog 1). Hackman is determined to get his man and of course we know of the subway scene where Ray &amp; Hackman play mind games jumping in and out of the carriages, but Ray comes out on top. Frog 1(Ray) hires a hit-man who tries to gun Hackman down, but misses, hackman chases after his would-be killer, it ends up in one of the best car chases filmed, although it&#39;s car v overhead train. and this car chase IS as real as it gets, no stunt people were used, no streets were shut down etc, which adds to the excitement. the would-be assassin ends up being shot by Doyle(Hackman).<br/><br/>Towards the end of the film Doyle find the hideout of the drug smuggled and frog 1, but once again frog 1 ends up outwitting doyle and escaping
Gritty and realistic police crime drama with the most exciting car chase in movie history. As Det.Jimmy &quot;Popeye&quot; Doyle, Gene Hackman, chases down assassin Pierre Nicoli, Marcel Bozzuffi, under the Brooklyn El-train that is as heart thumping now as it was some thirty years ago.<br/><br/>True story of &quot;The French Connection&quot; heroin shipment that was busted in New York by two determined police officers who came on to it by accident, and followed it through to the end. What makes this movie so effective is the realistic acting as policemen by Hackman and Roy Scheider, Det. Russo, and the gritty and grimy NYC locations. That makes the film look more like a documentary on city crime instead a movie about city crime. <br/><br/>Most of the movie is made up of tailing the drug dealers through the city to get a handle of just what their up to and where they plan to unload the drugs that they had smuggled into the city for distribution. The acting and direction is so good that its almost as effective, like the cat and mouse game between Popeye and the top drug smuggler Charnier (Fernando Rey) at the 42nd St. subway shuttle, as the incredible car vrs train chase scene that came much later in the movie.<br/><br/>The best thing about the French Connection&quot; if anything in the movie could top what we saw up to that point is that the ending didn&#39;t cop-out but left the viewers thinking that there are no happy endings when it comes to the never ending saga of cops and robbers, or in this case drug dealers. Also effective is the rivalry between the NYC police and the Federal agents who were assigned to the case and how the clash of personalities almost jeopardized the whole drug busting operation.<br/><br/>Bill Hickman, Bill Muldering, who was the top federal agent assigned to the case was the driver in the famous car chase under the El-train in the movie &quot;The French Connection&quot;. Muldering was also the driver in the great chase sequence in the movie &quot;Bullitt&quot; where he locked wheels with Steve McQueen in the streets and highways of San Francisco.
This tough, brilliant crime film features Hackman as the indefatigable Popeye Doyle, who passionately hates drug pushers.
The word &quot;frog&quot; is often used as a derogatory term for someone of French descent. When Popeye refers to Charnier as &quot;Frog One,&quot; he&#39;s trying to distinguish Charnier from his partner, Pierre Nicoli. It can also be a way to show Popeye&#39;s generally bigoted attitude. He&#39;s deliberately trying to confuse Willy into making a confession. Poughkeepsie is a small city about 80 miles north of New York on the Hudson River. Willy may have a drug connection up there that buys product from him and sells it in that region. His line, which is somewhere along the lines of &quot;when was the last time you picked your feet in Poughkeepsie&quot; is basically nonsense. Repeating it and variations of it including only Poughkeepsie or just when the person has last &quot;picked their feet&quot;, over and over in a threatening manner, is a tactic meant to bewilder the subject. While the criminal is desperately trying to figure out what this sentence is a code for, the interrogators intersperse the badgering with actual questions like &quot;who&#39;s your connection Willie, what&#39;s his name!?&quot; and &quot;is it Joe the barber?&quot; The totally confused criminal up against the wall, doesn&#39;t know what this Poughkeepsie thing is, but it sounds bad and he sure didn&#39;t do it. So to take the questioning away from this mysterious act the police think he&#39;s performed, that must be pretty terrible, Willie admits to what they really want to know out of fear. This tactic/phrase was actually developed by the character that Gene Hackman played, in real life (the movie is loosely based on a true story). Putting the car back together after spending several hours tearing it apart would have taken at least twice as long, plus there was the actual damage they caused to the interior while ripping out upholstery, carpeting &amp; other trim. From there it&#39;d be a simple matter of buying a new Lincoln, pulling out the rocker panels in that one &amp; stashing the heroin &amp; transferring the license plates to it.
